“Obviously he’s such an important person in the club and obviously it means a lot but I don’t want to comment,” Mourinho said.

“I wouldn’t comment even if the comments were negative. But the support I feel from Sir Alex is the support I’ve always felt with him except when I was a direct competitor and playing against his teams

“I always felt this kind of support, I think he felt the same when I was abroad in Italy and Spain.

“Friends supporting each other by a simple text message which means a lot in a certain moment.”

Mourinho has encouraged Ferguson to stay as involved at Manchester United as possible, following his retirement in 2013.

The Portugese boss added: “He doesn’t want to be around and come too many times. I think he feels free. I told him that this is his ‘house’ always and forever but just a couple of times.

“But we know that this is his club, his life, and that he is supporting us.”
