JOSE MOURINHO has revealed he was "very sad" when Zlatan Ibrahimovic left Inter Milan for Barcelona.

The pair won the 2008/09 Serie A together before the Swede left for Barcelona the following summer.

Mourinho admits he was hurt by the 35-year-old's departure but insists he never tried to stop him from leaving.

"One day Zlatan decided to go to Barca from Inter," Mourinho said. "I was very sad, but I did nothing to try to stop him from going."

Mourinho re-signed Ibrahimovic at on a free transfer last summer and the former Paris Saint-Germain hitman has already returned 26 goals this term.

United have already offered him a one-year extension, with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season, but Mourinho admits he will not beg him to stay.

"I never beg for a player to sign a contract, I never beg for a player to play for me," the Red Devils boss added.

"I don’t beg for players but if needed, I think United fans can go to the door of his house and stay there all night if needed. 

"I think they will go for sure. We want, we believe, that he is going to stay with us for one more season.”
