Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: Sergio Romero is pushing for Europa League place

SERGIO ROMERO appears to be convincing Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho he deserves to start against Ajax.

United's back-up goalkeeper shone again when given the chance in tonight's 0-0 draw at Southampton in the Premier League.

David De Gea was left out of the squad for the trip to St Mary's, with sixth place already secured for United.

But it gave players on the fringe a chance to show Mourinho what they can do in Stockholm.

United face Ajax in the Europa League final on May 24, with Champions League qualification solely relying on that game.

While De Gea is first choice, Romero's reliability in Europe this term and performance against Southampton has caught Mourinho's attention.

"I think all of them gave me positive feelings," Mourinho said.

"Sergio had a very good performance, more than very good.

"The team wasn't perfect but individually they gave me good things.

"They showed me they want to be an option for the final."

For us it's the important game of the year. We need the trophy for the club

On his clean sheet at Southampton and the Europa League final, Romero added: "For us, the result is important.

"When we take a clean sheet it is good for me, and defenders, and for the team.

"It gives us more confidence for the final. For us it's the important game of the year. We need the trophy for the club."

De Gea could even have played his last game for United with the keeper strongly linked over a move to Real Madrid this summer.
