MANCHESTER UNITED face a fight to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan after the Serie A giants insisted the transfer 'is not happening.'

Manchester United are keen to make Inter Milan star Perisic their third signing of the summer.

The Red Devils have already been busy, adding Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku to their ranks from Benfica and Everton respectively.

United have endured winger woes dating back to the days of Cristiano Ronaldo, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Angel Di Maria failing to deliver.

Jose Mourinho is hellbent on landing Perisic, who would provide competition for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford on the flanks.

However, Inter have now claimed the deal 'is not happening' in a development that would no doubt infuriate Mourinho.

"It's not happening," sporting director Piero Ausilio told Sky Sport Italia.

"Perisic is training with us and so far we have not taken into consideration anything that Manchester United have offered us."

The Croatia international has been at Inter since arriving from Wolfsburg in January 2015.

Jose Mourinho could have to look at alternative Manchester United targets

Despite the Serie A giants struggling, Perisic has still managed 20 goals from 79 games.

News he could be staying put will annoy Mourinho, who wants his business done early.

Speaking back in May, he all but confirmed the club would not be signing anyone in August because CEO Ed Woodward is on holiday.

"He knows since March who I want, what I want and how much I want," Mourinho said.

"He knows everything since March and now it is for him to work, because he will have holidays in August and in August I am working."
