Naby Keita to Liverpool: RB Leipzig appear to make transfer U-turn by hunting replacement

LIVERPOOL have reportedly been handed a boost in their pursuit of RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita.

Keita, 22, is Jurgen Klopp's No 1 transfer target at Liverpool after sealing the club-record signing of Mohamed Salah from Roma.

The Reds have already had two bids of £57million and £66m rejected by RB Leipzig.

Klopp is currently mulling over making a third bid of around £75m for the Guinea international as he bids to build a squad capable of coping with the dual demands of the Premier League and possible Champions League campaign.

But club chief Dietrich Mateschitz insists Keita is not for sale and he will see out his contract with the Bundesliga side.

However, German outlet Bild claim the club could be set to make a dramatic U-turn.

The Guinea international committed a "brutal" foul on Diego Demme during a pre-season training camp in Austria.

His team-mate supposedly required extensive treatment for his injuries and the session was abandoned.

Keita has since apologised for his actions, but Bild say he now seems unmotivated in training.

RB Leipzig are planning for life without Liverpool target Naby Keita

RB Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuttl insists "everything is okay" with Keita since the incident.

However, the club's sporting director Ralf Rangnick is apparently now preparing for his exit.

It is said he has sent out scouts to find a replacement for Keita, who has a £48m release clause in his contract for next summer.

Leipzig already have plenty of money at their disposal and the sale of Keita could free up even more funds for a potential spending spree.

The German side apparently wanted to keep Keita for at least another season, but plans appear to be changing with lurking.

Keita is contracted to Leipzig until the summer of 2020.
