Arsenal have been linked with a move for Jean-Michael Seri this month after Roma's deal for the 26-year-old fell through.

The Gunners are said to be keen to add a central midfielder to their ranks and have identified Seri and Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho as their targets.

The north London club are hopeful they can negotiate a cheaper deal with Nice as they are not willing to match his £36million release clause.

And the Ligue 1 club's president Jean-Pierre Rivere has hinted a deal could be in the pipeline after admitting two players will be sold.

When asked about Nice's ongoing transfer business, Rivere told French newspaper L'Equipe: "There should be three or four more arrivals and two departures.

"We want to finish these as soon as possible but certain cases take more time than others.

"I think we will manage because these last ones should be finalised faster than those from last year."

However, the Gunners could struggle to get the cut-price deal for Seri they are hoping for with Rivere sticking to his guns over release clause fees.

"People laughed at the release clauses of certain players," Rivere added.

"But now people realise that they are no joke and that we are in a favourable position when working on these cases."

Seri made 39 appearances for Nice last term, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in all competitions.

He is under contract with the Ligue 1 side until June 2019.
