Manchester United could confirm Nemanja Matic signing later today ahead of trip to Dublin

Matic completed a medical yesterday ahead of his £40million move from Chelsea to United.

The 28-year-old was pictured in a grey Manchester United training top yesterday with the number 31 on it.

United are expected to announce Matic’s arrival imminently, taking their summer spending to £150m following deals for Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof.

And the Manchester Evening News say United could confirm Matic’s signing later today ahead of their trip to Dublin for a pre-season friendly with Sampdoria.

The Red Devils play the Serie A giants at the Aviva Stadium at 7.45pm on Wednesday night.

Matic could make his first appearance in a red shirt against Sampdoria if his move goes through in time, most probably off the bench.

And the Serbia international is set to make his competitive debut in the UEFA Super Cup clash with Real Madrid next Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho will hope Matic is up to speed for United’s Premier League opener at home to West Ham on August 13, given he missed Chelsea’s pre-season tour of China.

The midfielder was left at home but has been training at their Cobham HQ.

After United’s 3-0 friendly victory over Valerenga last night, Mourinho said: "I'm waiting for news.

"I know that he wants that very, very much and when a player wants very, very much the chance is bigger.

"So I think we have a chance but in football until it's official, I have seen so many things happen that I refuse to say more than I am telling you now.

"I don't know [about the picture] because I was not there. Number 31 is a free number. It was Schweinsteiger. It's a free jersey, we have a few free and 31 is one of them."
