They then kick off their Premier League season against West Ham next Sunday.

New £40million signing Nemanja Matic is in line to make his first appearance after joining from Chelsea on Monday.

United were today backed by three former players to mount a strong title challenge.

David May said: “They will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. They will do okay.”

Fellow Red Devils old boy Jesper Blomqvist added: “I think there's a little bit left to come out of the transfer window and then we'll know. If United can find more consistency they will be up there.”

While Quinton Fortune added: “They have definitely got the team to win the league. At the moment it's a very strong squad.”
