The tough Bosnian, signed on a free transfer from Bundesliga club Schalke this summer, made himself an instant hero with Gunners fans as he headed the late equaliser against Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday before their penalty shoot-out victory.

The 24-year-old’s various nicknames before arriving in England included ‘The Destroyer’, ‘The Tank’ and ‘The Bosnian Hulk’ – and Walcott could see why.

“He is an absolute animal – incredible. He looks an absolute tank,” said the winger.

“He’s one tough unit to get past and I’m sure his physical attributes are going to be key to us this season. I see him in the gym every day, you can tell he looks after himself well, he eats the right food and he’s professional.

“He’s not really left any marks on me in training, but trust me, he’s not easy to get around – he’s quite wide. He fits perfectly for the Premier League.”
