Ian Wright discusses Manchester United's title chances

23:15: Ian Wright is adamant Jose Mourinho must have no excuses if he fails to deliver the title for Manchester United this season.

Jose Mourinho has splashed out close to £150million on new players, with Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic coming through the door.

And Wright thinks Mourinho simply has to deliver the title, considering the amount of money he has invested in signing players.

“When you’re United manager it’s a pre-requisite to managing a club of that stature,” Wright told Sky Sports.

“The amount Jose has spent, and the fact his second season at a club is normally a good one, then he has to win it.”

Jose Mourinho rules out Gareth Bale signing

23:00: Jose Mourinho has ruled out Gareth Bale signing for Manchester United.

"I think so," he said referring to whether Bale's inclusion meant he would not be allowed to leave.

"The club wants him, the manager wants him, and, more importantly, he wants the club.

"For me, it is game over. I think now everybody knows he is going to stay."

Matic to Man Utd a surprise

20:25: Paul Scholes admits he was surprised to see Chelsea sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United this summer.

Scholes said on BT Sport: “Big signings I think. I really like the Matic signing. That was the one that surprised me a little bit. It made you wonder why did Chelsea sell him?

“He brings aggression to United’s midfield which is something I think they have been lacking.

“I think he’s very similar in a way to Michael Carrick in a controlling midfielder, but what he brings what Michael doesn’t bring is a little bit of aggression which as I say he gets to the ball, he tackles, he allows other people to play."

Bale starts against United

18.45: Gareth Bale STARTS for Real Madrid in the Super Cup tonight in a move which looks to dash Manchester United's hopes of signing him this summer.

Last night Jose Mourinho revealed he would fight for Bale's signature if he wasn't part of Zinedine Zidane's plans.

But with the Wales star selected for tonight's games Zidane has shown his cards.

Rose odds slashed

16:57: Manchester United have seen their odds slashed by the bookies to sign Tottenham star Danny Rose.

The Red Devils are reportedly in the market for a new left-back this summer, with Jose Mourinho still unsure over injured Luke Shaw.

Reports have surfaced this week that United are keen to renew their interest in England international Rose, who they wanted in January.

And bookmakers Betfair suggest a deal could happen, having slashed United's odds of signing Rose from 9/1 to 5/1.

Bale would win league - Fletcher

16.30: Gareth Bale would lead Manchester United to the Premier League title if he joined from Real Madrid this summer, according to former Red Devils midfielder Darren Fletcher.

United boss Jose Mourinho yesterday admitted he would attempt to sign the Welshman if he did not play for Real in the European Super Cup clash against his side tonight.

“Not only would they be title favourites, but people would be expecting the title," Fletcher said on talkSPORT.

"That is the sort of level that signing is. It is the next-level signing. Ultimately it's all about Gareth staying fit as well."

Bale posts update

13:29: Gareth Bale is not thinking about a transfer to Manchester United - judging by his social media activity.

United boss Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane and captain Sergio Ramos have all had their say on his potential move to Old Trafford.

But Bale doesn’t appear to be taking much notice, last night posting a picture on his social media accounts alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in training with the message: “Super Cup time #HalaMadrid”.

And today Bale posted a video of himself taking on BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey at an electronic boxing punchbag.

Bale won both rounds against Humphrey and looked like he was enjoying the victory, writing: “The @btsport #HardestHits..Round One.... @mrjakehumphrey sorry!”

Bale move rubbished

12:47: Gareth Bale’s move to Manchester United has been rubbished one of the Real Madrid superstar's representatives.

TV presenter Jim White said on talkSPORT: "I've been speaking to one of his representatives and its not all its cracked up to be.

"Is it likely to happen? It certainly doesn't seem that way.

"I've been speaking to one of Bale's representatives [and I asked] is it likely? Would he move?

"He text back: 'Why would he? Also I don't talk about rubbish journalism.'"

Van Dijk interest?

10:38: Manchester United are about the only top Premier League not interested in Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk stunned Southampton by handing in an official transfer request last night and releasing a nearly 500-word statement explaining why.

The Saints captain is understood to prefer a move to Liverpool, where he would play under Jurgen Klopp.

But The Times say Chelsea and Arsenal hope that Southampton could still refuse to sell their captain to Liverpool because of the whole tapping up situation.

Manchester City have also been linked with Van Dijk but United are well-stocked in central defence following Victor Lindelof’s £30m move.

But could Mourinho join the race before the transfer deadline on August 31?

Mourinho can win Bale - Henry

08:10: Manchester United can blow other clubs out of the water in the race for Gareth Bale, Thierry Henry believes.

Express Sport understands Chelsea are also serious contenders to land the Real Madrid star.

However, Thierry Henry questions whether any other club can rival United for Bale, as Mourinho has already admitted he is ready to "fight".

"[Bale] is made for every league," Henry said on Sky Sports' The Debate show.

"If he becomes available I don't think it will only be Man Utd going in for him.

"But on the other side how many teams could compete with what Manchester United could offer?

"When you have a guy like Gareth Bale he gives you another dimension. If he leaves I'm sure [Mourinho] will try and buy him - and if he comes then watch out everybody."

Chelsea hijack Aurier move

07:35: Chelsea are locked in talks with Paris St Germain over a £27million move for fullback Serge Aurier.

Chelsea are locked in talks with PSG to hijack Manchester United’s move for Serge Aurier.

Chelsea have been galvanised into trying to push several big-money deals over the line before the transfer deadline, with unhappy manager Antonio Conte increasing his demands for more new faces.

The controversial Aurier, who is also the subject of interest from Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, has now become the player Conte is pushing hardest for.

But there is one more major complication to the deal – the 24-year-old Ivory Coast international is currently banned from entering the UK.

The defender was found guilty of assaulting a police officer outside a Paris nightclub last year and was subsequently denied entry to the UK for PSG’s Champions League clash with Arsenal in October. The veto would need to be lifted on appeal.

Nemanja Matic move questioned

05:15: Nemanja Matic’s move to Manchester United sums up Chelsea’s business model.

Matic completed a £40million switch from Chelsea to Manchester United just over a week ago.

And Carragher admits he is surprised by the nature of the deal, insisting it typifies the west London outfit’s business model.

“Matic’s move to Manchester United was the perfect example of that,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“If you’re a manager you’d be saying ‘why would I let him go, especially to a rival’.

“His replacement is a 23-year-old but you don’t know how good he’ll be.”

Danny Rose interest re-ignited

04:45: Tottenham are bracing themselves for a fresh approach from Manchester United for Danny Rose, reports claim.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for the England international, as doubts persist over Luke Shaw, who failed to win over Jose Mourinho last term.

Manchester City have also been courting the 27-year-old, but face a fight on their hands to sign him.

According to the Daily Mirror, Spurs are well aware that clubs want to pinch Rose.

The report says United and Inter Milan are both vying for his signature and are ready to resurrect their interest.

Zinedine Zidane responds to Jose Mourinho’s Gareth Bale comments

04:15: Zinedine Zidane has responded to Jose Mourinho’s cheeky comment he will try to sign Gareth Bale.

Mourinho suggested he would try to bring Bale to Old Trafford if he doesn’t start for Real Madrid against United in the Super Cup tonight (7:45pm).

And Zidane ducked the question, as he said: “Bale is a Real Madrid player that’s all I can say. I want to talk about tomorrow’s match.

“We are here, him, me and all the other players and the fans are here for the match only.”
