MANCHESTER UNITED midfielder Paul Pogba played for himself rather than his team in their European Super Cup defeat against Real Madrid tonight.

That is the opinion of pundit and former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Pogba started the game against Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid, looking to help manager Jose Mourinho win his fourth piece of silverware in his 12 months at Manchester United.

However, Gerrard was less than impressed with the £89million man's showing in the first half in Skopje.

The former England captain thought Pogba was selfish in attack and rash in defence.

"I think he's been poor," Gerrard said of Pogba on BT Sport at half time.

"If we're being brutally honest I think his decision making out there in the first half hasn't been good.

"Here he does well cutting in but he has to slide (Henrikh) Mkhiatryan in for a chance on goal.

Steven Gerrard says Paul Pogba was selfish against Real Madrid tonight

"Here he gambles to come out and header the ball away, gets underneath it, it could have been another goal for Real Madrid

"Here he is a bit selfish, goes for the shot when I think he could have played it to Mkhitaryan again.

"I think he's been a bit individual out there rather than thinking of his team-mates in the first 45."

United lost the game 2-1, with debutant Romelu Lukaku pulling one back in the second half after Casemiro and Isco gave Real a 2-0 lead.
