Marcus Rashford is key man to Man Utd winning trophies, not Romelu Lukaku - Steve Nicol

MARCUS RASHFORD will be the key man if Manchester United are to win major honours this season, according to pundit Steve Nicol.

Rashford burst onto the scene 18 months ago as an 18-year-old and scored on his Europa League and Premier League debuts.

Last term he struggled to nail down a starting spot with Zlatan Ibrahimovic used by manager Jose Mourinho as the main centre-forward.

Ibrahimovic has since left the club but has been replaced by Romelu Lukaku, who joined from Everton for £75million last month.

Despite the Belgian's mega-money arrival, Nicol thinks Rashford will have a big part to play in attempting to win Manchester United their first league title in five years.

I think if they’re to be successful the key will be Marcus Rashford

“I know they’ve signed Lukaku to put the ball in the back of the net, but I think if they’re to be successful the key will be Rashford,” the Liverpool legend said on ESPN FC.

“I think Lukaku will take a lot of attention away and if Rashford can play in and around Lukaku, then he can score goals. If he plays wide I think he’s effective.

“A successful Man United for me means Rashford (playing well).

Steve Nicol says this season is big for Man Utd striker Marcus Rashford

“I think he’s got all the qualities, he hasn’t quite managed to put it together.

“I think this season is a big season for him.”

Rashford has scored 10 goals in 43 Premier League appearances since his debut against Arsenal at Old Trafford in early 2015.
