Victor Lindelof must show Jose Mourinho why he should start for Man Utd - Joleon Lescott

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Victor Lindelof will take time to settle in the Premier League and has to prove to Jose Mourinho he has got what it takes to play in England.

New Man Utd signing Lindelof concedes penalty after poor challenge

That is the view of former Premier League and England defender Joleon Lescott.

Lindelof was Manchester United’s first signing of the summer, joining from Benfica for £31million in June.

The Sweden international had an unconvincing pre-season with the Red Devils and was left out of the starting XI for the Premier League opener against West Ham on Sunday.

Eric Bailly partnered Phil Jones at the back in the 4-0 victory and Lescott says Lindelof must take his chance whenever he is given it by his manager.

Victor Lindelof must prove to Jose Mourinho he's good enough to star for Man Utd, says Lescott

I’m sure given an opportunity he will show he is worthy of his Man United place

“I’m sure it will (take him a bit of time to settle),” former Manchester City star Lescott said on Sky Sports.

“They needed to add someone due to the injury situation last season and players not being as fit as Mourinho would like.

“He’s had an indifferent season, it’s been hard for him, obviously when you go to Man United the pressure is on straight away.

Victor Lindelof has had a difficult start to life at Man Utd, says Joleon Lescott

“The opponents they play in pre-season now aren’t the sort of team I played when I was growing up.

“There are a lot more established forwards, so it’s been tough.

“I’m sure given an opportunity he will show he is worthy of his Man United place.”

Lindelof did make his competitive debut in the European Super Cup loss to Real Madrid last week.
