Virgil van Dijk: Southampton are being stubborn not selling to Liverpool - Jan Molby

VIRGIL VAN DIJK looks less and less likely to join Liverpool as the transfer window draws to a close, according to former Liverpool star Jan Molby.

Matt Le Tissier: van Dijk has been unprofessional

Jurgen Klopp admitted earlier today Liverpool are still in the market for new players.

But he has been frustrated in his attempts to sign Liverpool’s top two targets: Naby Keita and Van Dijk.

The Reds are reportedly willing to wait to sign Keita who will be available for cheaper next summer due to a release clause being activated in 12 months time.

But a move for Van Dijk has proven more troublesome ever since they were forced to apologise after Southampton complained to the Premier League about Liverpool’s approach.

I don't know what we have done to upset Southampton to the fact they are being so stubborn about it

Jan Molby on Virgl van Dijk

The Holland international has since handed in a transfer request at the south coast club but they are seemingly unwilling to do business with Liverpool.

And Molby, who won two First Division titles during his time on Merseyside, can’t see Southampton changing their stance.

“Jurgen Klopp has spoken a fair bit in the last week about looking to strengthen the squad,” Molby said in his column for the Liverpool Echo.

“And I think Liverpool will. However, I'm not sure the incomings will be top shelf.

“With Virgil van Dijk, everybody now knows Southampton would rather sell to Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester City than Liverpool, so I'm not convinced that will happen.

“The Southampton situation is strange. I don't know what we have done to upset Southampton to the fact they are being so stubborn about it.

“Southampton are a selling club, and it's not just Liverpool they sell to. They sell to everybody. They let their managers go to everybody.

“I still think we'll sign a few decent players before the transfer window shuts, but I'd like to see Van Dijk, though. I really would.”
