De Gea, 26, has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid for some time with Florentino Perez a long-term admirer.

The La Liga champions came close to signing the Spain international in 2015, but an administrative error on deadline day prevented the transfer from going through.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has continued to insist that is not for sale this summer.

However, The Sun claim Real have turned their attentions back to the former Atletico Madrid stopper after ending their pursuit of Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe.

It is said Zinedine Zidane is no longer interested in bringing the France international to the Bernabeu due to the impressive form of Marco Asensio.

now apparently have no interest in signing any other Galactico-style outfield players.

But they remain keen on bringing in a marquee signing, and De Gea fits the bill.

The Sun say Real are now looking to step up their efforts to sign the shot-stopper by lodging a bid of around £46million.

However, Mourinho reckons he will '100 per cent' be staying at  this summer.

"I can guarantee that he's not going this season, that I can. My feeling is it will be very difficult for him to go. Because he's a very honest boy, very straight," Mourinho said last month.

Real Madrid have reignited their interest in Manchester United keeper David De Gea

"He was contacted for a long time. The club was closed, then we open because I always have this feeling of when a player has a desire to go I don't like to stop players to go because in the end you don't get what you expect from them if they want to move and they don't.

"So we open it and then they decided to close and I don't think the feeling from him towards them is very, very good. I see him very happy and focused and working better than ever, so for me 100 per cent he stays with us."

The report adds Mourinho still remains keen on signing Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic.

But they are also considering a £55m move for Mbappe's team-mate Thomas Lemar.

De Gea is contracted to United until the summer of 2019.
