Man United target Ivan Perisic scores screamer against Chelsea

MANCHESTER UNITED TRANSFER NEWS LIVE UPDATES: Latest on Ivan Perisic, David De Gea, Luke Shaw and more…

Chelsea wrong over Lukaku and Matic

21.35: Manchester United stars Romelu Lukaku should be playing under Antonio Conte at Chelsea, according to pundit and former Arsenal defender Martin Keown.

The pair have started their United careers with a bang, helping them to back-to-back 4-0 wins over West Ham and Swansea.

But Keown says Chelsea should have kept Matic and signed Lukaku.

“I thought they should both be at Chelsea,” Keown said on BT Sport.

“Surely Lukaku wanted to go back for unfinished business at Chelsea but the manager wasn’t interested.

“Matic should never have been allowed to leave Chelsea.”

Aurier hint

20:00: Serge Aurier has been left out of the latest PSG squad to face Toulouse in Paris on Sunday - sparking ever more rumours that he could be on his way out of the club this summer.

The defender has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League with Tottenham and Manchester United both chasing him.

And Aurier being left out of PSG’s next game has fuelled rumours he could be on his way out of the Parc des Princes.

Is Ivan Perisic actually needed?

17:40: Is Ivan Perisic actually needed?

Looking at Manchester United today, you would have to disagree.

Marcus Rashford looked threatening against Swansea - it was just his end product that let him down.

But Anthony Martial was superb when he came on and the Frenchman's rejuvenation could force them to shelve plans for a fourth summer signing.

Martial hint

16:50: Anthony Martial doesn’t look like he’s leaving Manchester United any time soon.

The striker scored for a second successive game in United’s 4-0 win over Swansea.

Jose Mourinho praised the player, saying: “Anthony Martial is working hard. He is confident.

“The French language connection is there to help him a lot and get to the level we know he can be because the potential is huge.”

And now Martial has taken to instagram to drop a big hint that he’s staying at Old Trafford.

The ex-Monaco ace has posted a picture of himself pointing at the United badge on his shirt.

Man Utd eye Varane

16:15: Manchester United want to sign Raphael Varane before the summer is out.

United manager Jose Mourinho wants at least one more player added to his squad.

The Red Devils have tried to sign Gareth Bale this summer but Real Madrid refused to consider the sale.

But Spanish outlet Don Balon claim United still want one of the Bernabeu club’s big stars.

According to the report, United are considering a offer for defender Varane.

However, the bid would have to be a big one to convince Real to sell up.

Mourinho on Chelsea crisis

13:48: Jose Mourinho insists there is no crisis at Chelsea since they sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United.

"When people say, for example, Chelsea lost an important midfield player, if you lose one but you buy Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater, for example, what's the problem?" Mourinho said about Chelsea losing Matic to United.

"The problem is when you sell and you don't buy. When you sell and you keep buying, what's the problem?

"You're probably even stronger [than last season], so I think every top team in the Premier League is strong enough, is potentially strong enough, with the financial situation to be fighting for everything.

"And when everybody is also in Europe — five in the Champions League and then two in the Europa League, you have the top seven teams playing for everything and all of them are strong."

Perisic to sign contract

10:42: Ivan Perisic is set to sign his long-awaited contract at Inter Milan, which will end any lingering hopes Manchester United have of landing the winger.

Perisic has been pursued by United for most of the summer.

United won’t meet his £50m valuation, although Ed Woodward was said to have contacted Inter this week to discuss a possible deal.

The Red Devils were prepared to offer him a £6.4m annual salary.

But Mediaset Premium say United will miss out on the player, with a contract extension now set to be signed.

And Sky Sport Italia add that Inter will pay the Croatia international £90,000 a week.

Martial staying put

10:08: Jose Mourinho says he is sticking by Anthony Martial amid reports he could be sold.

"I have faith in Anthony," Mourinho insisted. "Probably the player I was looking at was not a pure winger because I have pure wingers.

"Probably the player that I was looking for is a player that allows me to play with three at the back and play wing backs.

"Because - as a pure attacking player - Anthony is a good player. He is one of the players I believe is going to have a better season this season than the previous season.”

Man Utd favourites in Lemar chase

09:02: Manchester United are favourites to sign Thomas Lemar over Arsenal, claims journalist Ian McGarry.

“I’d say Manchester United are in the driving seat right now (for Lemar),” McGarry said on The Transfer Window podcast.

“I think Wenger was depending on the whole French connection at Arsenal, bringing in a player who obviously has played for the (French) national team with Giroud, Lacazette, Koscielny and others.

“But they haven’t got the deal over the line yet and they’ve been trying for six weeks.

“And if Manchester United did come in with the right offer and the right contract and the charm and charisma of Jose Mourinho telling a player how he’ll play, where he’ll play as he does.”

Sanchez to Man Utd

08:01: Paul Merson says Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez would guarantee Manchester United the title if he moved to Old Trafford.

"Manchester United should make a bid of more than £50m for Alexis Sanchez because he could bring them the title," Merson told the Daily Star.

"I wouldn’t get too carried away by the way they steamrolled West Ham last Sunday because they are still a player short for me. For the first 25 minutes or so of that game they never looked like scoring.

"It was just like last season all over again. Then a bit of magic and they’re in front. But will they do that every week?

"In the end West Ham just rolled over. I didn’t fancy United at the start of the season and I didn’t see anything in that game to change my mind.

"But if they got Sanchez, I would. He would make a massive difference.

"Arsenal won’t sell him to a rival for £50m but if United offered £60m or £70m he goes. United can afford it as well.

"They would get most of it back in shirt sales. They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world and their club shop is the size of a shopping centre. They should go for him."

Mourinho praises Lukaku

05:00: Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on Romelu Lukaku for his ability to connect with his other attacking players.

Lukaku, 24, has got his Manchester United career off to a flying start with two goals on the opening day of the Premier League in the 4-0 win over West Ham.

He joined from Everton for an initial fee of £75m, which will rise to £90m based on performance related add-ons.

The Belgium international and Marcus Rashford worked well off each other during pre-season and that continued in the same vein at Old Trafford last Saturday.

And Mourinho reckons their partnership works well, but he also thinks Lukaku's addition to the squad compliments his other attacking players too.

"I feel that connection [between Lukaku and Rashford] but I also feel that connection with more players," Mourinho said.

"I feel Martial and Romelu is a good connection. I feel Lingard is a good connection. I feel Mkhitaryan is a good connection.”

Higginbotham on Lukaku

03:30: Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will be given more chances to rack up the goals now Manchester United have Romelu Lukaku, according to Danny Higginbotham.

Jose Mourinho’s men got their Premier League campaign off to a flying start last weekend with an emphatic 4-0 win over West Ham.

Lukaku helped himself to a double, while Martial and Pogba also on the scoresheet.

And Higginbotham thinks Lukaku’s ability to stretch defenders will ensure his team-mates reap the rewards.

“Lukaku, who scored two against the Hammers, likes to play on the shoulder of the defenders and I expect him to venture much further forward than Zlatan ever did,” Higginbotham wrote in The Sun.

“As a defender, if I was up against Lukaku, I’d give myself a yard or two.

“But by dropping deep, your defence becomes narrow and this creates more space down the sides.”

Mourinho installs faith in Martial

01:00: Manchester United insisted he has faith in Anthony Martial and has backed him to improved this season.

He is one of the players I believe is going to have a better season this season than the previous season.

"I look at some of my players and I am sure that some players are going to be better. Anthony is that for sure."

De Gea to Juve?

20.00: Mino Raiola reportedly told Juventus to try and sign Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea this summer.

The Sun claim Raiola told the Serie A giants to focus on signing De Gea so his other client, AC Milan's Gianluigi Donnarumma, could move to United.

The report says Juve were initially pursuing Donnarumma but Milan were never interested in selling to a direct rival.

The Serie A champions ended up signing Wojciech Szczesny from Arsenal after De Gea told them he would only consider a return to Spain.

Manchester United deals done

18.30: Jose Mourinho says he doesn’t expect any more signings this summer despite originally asking for four new players.

United have signed three so far - with Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic - but Mourinho thinks his business is done.

"I don't think we are, unless something happened that put us in the market again,” Mourinho said.

"I told Mr Woodward that obviously my plans were four, but I also told him 'be cool, no pressure from me, do what you think is best for the club'.

"We will be together again for another transfer window in January and another next summer, so there is no pressure from me at all. I'm happy with the squad we have and I'm ready to go without the fourth player."

Mourinho wants transfer window change

14:12: Jose Mourinho wants the transfer window to close before the start of the season next summer.

Mourinho said: “As a football manager and not a market man - just a football man just as somebody who wants to work with the team, work with the players - I would prefer the window to close as soon as possible.

“So everybody knows the players we have and the deals will be done earlier and nobody would be waiting for the last week.

“Then we wouldn’t have the situation of sometimes a player plays game number one for a team and game number two for another team.

“And the question marks somebody puts, if other leagues don’t close at the same time are we in danger of losing players in the last couple of weeks?

“My question is how many clubs in the world are powerful enough buy the best players in the Premier League and the answer is I think is very obvious.

“So the risk is minimal and even those powerful clubs have to know if we can’t buy after, let’s say 14th or 15th of August more or less, if we can’t buy players we’re not going to sell.

“So if they are interested in players from the Premier League they also have to do it before the limit. So again, I repeat, I’m not a market man but as a football manager I would like it to close before the first match.”

Mourinho on deals

13:51: Jose Mourinho says he is happy with his current squad but would like one more player before the transfer window shuts.

Asked if he is finished for the summer, he said: “Unless something happens that puts us in the market again.

“Obviously, my plans were four but I also told them to be cool, there is no pressure from me, do what you think is best for the club.

“We will be together again for another window in January and one next summer so there is no pressure at all from me.

“I am happy with the squad we have. I’m ready to go without a fourth signing.”

Draxler contact

13:20: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea AND Liverpool have all contacted PSG regarding a deal for Julian Draxler.

That is according to the Gambling Times, who claim the Premier League quartet are keen to secure the Germany international.

Draxler’s sudden availability - as reported by French newspaper L’Equipe - appears to have caught the interest of England’s top clubs.

PSG are supposedly willing to sell for as little as £30million - a bargain in the current market.

Man Utd transfers uncovered

12:27: Manchester United still want at least one more signing this summer.

Our man in Manchester Richard Tanner explains how .

United sources say the trail has gone cold for Ivan Perisic with Inter Milan unwilling to lower their £48m valuation and the Croatian apparently not prepared to kick up a Diego Costa stink to force a move through.

United retain an interest in Gareth Bale – it goes back a decade to his Southampton days - although the player is showing no inclination to leave Real Madrid at the moment while Real seem happy to keep him.

Matic talks Man Utd switch

11:25: Nemanja Matic has shed light on the reason why he left Chelsea for Manchester United.

"He [Mourinho] was very important for me," Matic told Sky Sports.

"He bought me to Chelsea from Benfica and now when I decided to come to Manchester, he was a reason to come here.

"Mourinho was the reason and so was the club, Manchester United, so you don't need to think a lot about if you are going to come. My decision was very quick and very clear."

Conte didn't want Matic sale

10.35: Chelsea boss Antonio Conte did not want to let midfielder Nemanja Matic leave the club for Manchester United, according to journalist and former goalkeeper David Preece.

Matic joined Manchester United from Chelsea for £40million last month, leaving many questioning why the Blues would sell to a direct rival.

“Of course (it was a surprise),” former Aberdeen goalkeeper Preece said on talkSPORT.

“If it was up to him I don’t think he would have wanted to lose him.”

De Gea to Madrid still possible

09.03: Manchester United star David de Gea could finally seal a move to Real Madrid this summer if Los Blancos make him and the Red Devils a respectable offer, according to journalist Ian McGarry.

McGarry said on The Transfer Window podcast: "So we're looking at under two weeks left of the transfer window left to go, I think United will resist this because trying to get a replacement for De Gea would be very, very difficult for them.

"But what we also know is De Gea sees himself playing for Real Madrid in his career.

"He's already imagined himself in that shirt.

"He will want the move and if it comes back that they make him personally a very good offer in terms of the contract and that they offer enough money for United to be tempted to sell this could be one that we see finally concluded when the window closes in September."

Draxler a good choice

07:30: Julian Draxler could be the answer to Manchester United’s problems, claim the MEN.

Draxler is free to leave PSG and United are in the running to sign him, according to the bookmakers.

The Red Devils have already missed out on Ivan Perisic, who is set to remain at Inter Milan, although Ed Woodward is hoping a late bid could force Inter's hand (06:00).

And the report claims Draxler could therefore be a suitable target for Jose Mourinho.

Woodward meets with Perisic's agent

06:00: Ed Woodward has met with Ivan Perisic's agent Fali Ramadani to try and push through a deal.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been chasing the Croatia international all summer.

The Portuguese boss wants to make him his fourth signing of the window as he looks to bolster his attacking ranks even further.

Inter are continuing to play hardball over his £48million valuation, but the Daily Mirror say United still have a £39m offer on the table.

Ramadani is also said to have held discussions with Inter officials to try and reach a decision on his client's future.

Real Madrid renew De Gea interest

05:30: Real Madrid have reignited their interest in Manchester United keeper David De Gea.

De Gea, 26, has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid for some time with Florentino Perez a long-term admirer.

The La Liga champions have been trying to sign Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe throughout this summer.

But The Sun say Zinedine Zidane has now decided to give up the chase as he is convinced by Marco Asensio's capabilities.

However, Florentino Perez still wants a Galactico-style signing this summer, and De Gea fits the bill.

It is said they have made a £46million bid to try and lure him to the Bernabeu.

Shaw set to stay at Old Trafford

05:00: Manchester United are ready to extend Luke Shaw's contract by a further year.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer with just 10 months remaining on his current deal.

But The Times say United are ready to exercise the option in his contract to keep him at the club for another year.

Jose Mourinho was impressed with Shaw during the pre-season tour of America and is hoping he will be fit for selection by the end of next month.

Schwarzer backs Man Utd to win title

04:30: Jose Mourinho's pedigree of always winning the title in his second season at every club he has been at makes Manchester United one of the favourites for the title.

That's according to former Middlesbrough and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer who has been impressed with the signings of Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic.

“Man United for me are one of the favourites to win the league,” Schwarzer told Sky Sports.

“The acquisitions over the summer have been excellent.

“Jose Mourinho, in his second year, is always successful wherever he is.”
