Man Utd transfer news: Willian was tempted by move, I know Mourinho wanted him - McGarry

JOSE MOURINHO was desperate to sign Willian because of his versatility, according to journalist Ian McGarry.

And the Chelsea star was tempted to move to Manchester United - only for Chelsea to refuse to sell.

McGarry told The Transfer Window podcast: "We spoke last week about how the Gareth Bale situation around the Super Cup was a little bit of drama, a little bit of a side-show, and not necessarily a truthful move on Jose Mourinho's part with regards to his intention of signing Bale.

"It was always my understanding that he wanted a more versatile midfielder who could play on both flanks, someone who could even drop back.

"He wanted someone who works very hard off the ball.

"I know for a fact he wanted to sign Willian from Chelsea but Chelsea refused to sell.

"Willian even gave an interview in Brazil two weeks ago saying he spoke to Jose Mourinho and he was tempted, but he was told by Chelsea he wasn't allowed to leave."

Mourinho has now realigned his sights with less than two weeks left of the transfer window.

The Special One has identified Monaco wideman Thomas Lemar as an option - in a possible transfer blow to Arsenal.

McGarry added: "I think this is a very sensible and practical move from Manchester United.

"Lemar is available, he's been the subject of intense interest from Arsenal way back in May and so not only would it be a coup because it would fill that last hole, it would obviously be a slap in the face of Arsene Wenger.

"We know Jose Mourinho would quite enjoy that."
