Gabriel had been deemed surplus to requirements by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger after struggling to make much of an impact at the Emirates.

The Brazil international arrived in Spain yesterday to finalise his move to La Liga giants Valencia.

And the Spanish side have today confirmed the 26-year-old on a five-year deal until June 2022.

“Valencia have reached an agreement with Arsenal for the transfer of Gabriel Paulista,” a club statement read.

“The Brazilian player has joined Valencia CF for the next 5 seasons, until the 30th of June, 2022, with a buyout clause of 80 million euros.”

In his first interview with the club, Paulista said: “On a personal level I’m very happy to come here and sign for Valencia.

“Spain is obviously going through a tough moment after the events in Barcelona and I want to send a hug from Valencia.”

Arsenal also wished the centre-half well at his new club and praised his performances in last season’s FA Cup in a club statement.

“For many supporters, his finest performance in an Arsenal shirt came in last season's Emirates FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City,” the statement read.

“His aerial dominance and tough tackling helped put us on our way to the final.

“We would like to thank Gabriel for his contribution to the club and to wish him well for his return to La Liga with Valencia.”

Gabriel previously spent two years in Spain with Villarreal prior to joining the Gunners in 2015.
