Chelsea transfer news: Deadline day deal with Man Utd the right move - Martin Samuel

CHELSEA should have made Manchester United wait until deadline day to sign Nemanja Matic, according to Sunday Supplement guest Martin Samuel.

Ray Wilkins blasts Chelsea for selling Matic to Man United

Matic completed a £40million move to Old Trafford last month and he's helped United to two 4-0 wins in their first two Premier League games.

Antonio Conte has hinted the move wasn't sanctioned by him and he's been left a frustrated figure with the lack of high-quality new additions.

But Daily Mail journalist Samuel thinks it wasn't necessarily the move they got wrong - but the time they chose to do it.

Instead, he thinks they'd have been better served doing business on deadline day.

He said: "It makes Chelsea look foolish. Manchester United have six points, if Chelsea lose to Tottenham today which isn't unthinkable, they'll be six points to the good on Chelsea after two matches.

Nemanja Matic GETTY

Nemanja Matic joined Manchester United from Chelsea

"That's having sold them one of their midfield players who has been very influential so far, who is making Paul Pogba into the player United bought last year.

"I don't understand why you'd solve someone else's problem, I just don't understand that.

"I don't understand why you'd solve that problem before the season started.

"Wait until August 31st, if you want to do business.

Antonio Conte let Nemanja Matic join Manchester United

"Then, on August 31st, phone Manchester United and say 'you can have him if you want him'.

"Then they've got to suddenly scramble around. If you know you're going to do that, you can talk to the manager and say 'this is what we're going to do but we won't do it before the season started'.

"Then you can do all your business, you can do everything then sell Matic on the last day."
