Chelsea news: Tiemoue Bakayoko has some better attributes than Nemanja Matic - Redknapp

CHELSEA new-boy Tiemoue Bakayoko has some better attributes than Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, according to pundit Jamie Redknapp.

Chelsea collected their first win of the season today, overcoming Tottenham 2-1, following their shock opening-day defeat to Burnley last weekend.

Bakayoko, who joined the Blues from Monaco for £40million in July, made his first appearance for Antonio Conte’s side.

The Frenchman has replaced Matic in the Chelsea team, who joined Manchester United for the same price.

Redknapp was impressed with Bakayoko considering he had not had a pre-season and says he is so much more powerful than Matic.

“I thought he did very well considering he’s not had a pre-season,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

“It’s been difficult because there has been so many comparisons with Nemanja Matic and the importance that he had at Chelsea

“Obviously he’s not there now and I’m sure he was a bit nervous about that.

“I thought today he was very composed, he was powerful, completely different to Nemanja Matic.

Chelsea news: Tiemoue Bakayoko has more power than Man Utd's Nemanja Matic, says Jamie Redknapp

“He (Bakayoko) is a midfield powerhouse, he worked extremely hard today, he had a different role to what he will probably have in some games because Chelsea played with a diamond.

“I think Chelsea have got a good player here, make no mistake about it, 23 years of age and I think in a few years to come he will only get better.”

Marcos Alonso gave Chelsea the lead midway through the first half at Wembley with a stunning free kick which left Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris helpless.

A Michy Batshuayi own goal looked to have rescued a point for Spurs but Alonso popped up again in the final five minutes to beat Lloris at his near post, who will be disappointed to have let it in.
