Wayne Rooney netted the opener, as Everton looked to be heading for a famous victory against Manchester City earlier this evening.

His strike was his 200th overall in the Premier League and he is breathing down the neck of the record goalscorer Alan Shearer, who has 260 to his name.

Rooney’s strike was his ninth against City, with only Shearer scoring more (11).

But Pep Guardiola’s men escaped with a 1-1 draw at the Etihad, when eight minutes from time.

England have a World Cup qualifier against Malta a week on Friday.

Rooney last played for the Three Lions against Scotland last year, with Gareth Southgate putting his faith in the youngsters.

And when asked about his chances of getting a phone call from Southgate, Rooney said: “We'll see. I'm just focused on Everton.
