Rooney joined Alan Shearer in a select club to become only the second player to score 200 Premier League goals after he put the ball in the net in the first half.

Sterling salvaged a point for City towards the end of the game, before Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off for a sliding tackle on Sergio Aguero.

Rooney took to Twitter to mock some Manchester City supporters after the game as he posted a picture of him celebrating in front of unimpressed City fans.

Alongside it the 31-year-old wrote: “Always nice to see a few familiar faces.”

He added: “We'll see. I'm just focused on Everton.

“I’ll speak to Gareth [Southgate] over next few days, we'll have a conversation and see what happens.”
