Luke Shaw ready to put two years of injury misery behind as he steps up Man Utd comeback

LUKE SHAW is finally ready to put almost two years of injury woe behind him and prove his worth to Jose Mourinho.

The defender, 22, has had a miserable time since breaking his leg in two places during a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in September 2015.

He has met with further setbacks in his attempts to get back up to speed, suffering ankle ligament damage in April that put him out of action for four months.

But he played for the first time since then on Monday, featuring for an hour for United’s Under-23 side against Swansea at Leigh Sports Village.

Ashley Young also stepped up his comeback from a hamstring injury by playing in that match, and both are in contention to return for the Red Devils next month, after the international break.

Shaw said: “It’s been tough but I’ve been through it before and I know how to deal with it.

“When I look back at the injury I had last time, I’ve come back stronger this time and more positive.

“Now it’s about getting time on the pitch. I’m feeling really good and hungry for this season.”

Shaw had a tough time last season, with manager Jose Mourinho questioning his attitude in public towards the end of the campaign.

But Mourinho has made a point of including Shaw on Manchester United trips since his most recent injury setback to make him feel involved with the squad.

The United boss took the defender to Stockholm for May’s Europa League final, and on the pre-season tour of the United States, as well as to Skopje for the UEFA Super Cup defeat by Real Madrid earlier this month.

“It was really helpful,” Shaw said. “It was great for team bonding. There are new players coming in and everyone needs to get to know each other better because obviously we’re going to be on the pitch together at times this season.

“It was nice, but at the same time it was frustrating and a bit sad because you want to be out there on the pitch.

“It wasn’t to be but we’ve got very important games this season with the Champions League, big Premier League games and cup games. There are a lot of games and I’ll be ready when the manager calls on me.”

Shaw and Young both trained with United’s first team yesterday, along with defender Marcos Rojo, who has been out since April with knee ligament damage.

Mourinho said last month that Rojo “has no chance before December” of a comeback.
