MANCHESTER UNITED star David De Gea was pressured into signing a new contract by former boss Louis van Gaal back in 2015, reports claim.

Manchester United nearly lost De Gea to La Liga giants Real Madrid back in the summer of 2015.

The Spain international was wanted at the Bernabeu with manager at the time Rafa Benitez determined to land his man.

A deal looked to be on the cards after a £30million fee was agreed, with Keylor Navas also thrown in.

However, in a stunning twist, the 26-year-old ended up staying and signing a new deal after a faulty fax machine scuppered his dream move back to his homeland.

However, Spanish outlet Diario Gol claim Van Gaal pressured De Gea into extending his stay.

It is said that the Dutchman wanted him to ink an extension as a show of commitment.

At the time, De Gea was dropped for Sergio Romero, infamously being forced to watch from the stands as the Red Devils beat Tottenham 1-0 on the opening day of the season.

The Argentina international’s shakiness cost them against Swansea - just days before De Gea nearly left - but still Louis Van Gaal opted to keep the faith.

David De Gea has helped Manchester United win three major trophies since signing a new deal in 2015

Diario Gol add, however, that a move to Spain is not off the cards entirely.

Real continue to harbour hope of raiding United for their No1 despite their attempts to sign him being thwarted by Jose Mourinho this summer.

But, should they miss out, then they will look to raid Atletico Madrid for Jan Oblak instead.
