Liverpool v Arsenal: Arsene Wenger explains why Alexandre Lacazette was dropped

ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger has explained his decision to drop Alexandre Lacazette for their clash with Liverpool this afternoon.

Gerrard impressed with Arsenal's signing of Lacazette

Arsenal signed Lacazette from Lyon last month, paying £52million to make the France international their most expensive transfer of all time.

But despite the 26-year-old scoring against Chelsea and Leicester, he has found himself benched for this afternoon’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

And Wenger has now explained the decision is due to the fact he is still adapting to life in England.

“Lacazette is still in an adaptation phase, and it’s down to the fact this trio [Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck] finished well last season,” he said.

“I used them as well on occasions in the Premier League.

“It’s difficult to choose from but I have a strong offensive bench.”

Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started, despite talk they could be set to quit the Arsenal.

Sanchez is wanted by Manchester City, while Liverpool and Chelsea want Oxlade-Chamberlain.

And Wenger added he had no concerns about their focus prior to kick-off.

“No, not at all,” he said when quizzed if he was worried about their mental state.

“Talk about a move does not depend on us. Our focus depends on us and how much we want to win depends on us.

“All the rest, what people say, you can never mask and we have to deal with that in our job.”
