Mbappe looks set to leave Monaco for Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain in a £166million deal.

However, the France international will initially join on loan with PSG having the option to buy him next summer in order to comply with financial fair play rules.

Prior to his imminent move to the Parc des Princes, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Arsenal were tipped to sign him after a stunning breakthrough campaign where he scored 26 goals across all competitions.

But Squawka claims Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United were also determined to snap him up.

The Red Devils were barely mentioned as being in the race to sign the 18-year-old with Mourinho looking elsewhere.

However, Squawka claim they had earmarked him as a priority signing but ultimately pulled a plug on the deal.

It is the second failed striker signing of the transfer window for the Red Devils.

It is an open secret Mourinho was initially keen to sign Atletico Madrid hitman Antoine Griezmann.

Man Utd Transfer News: Romelu Lukaku signed instead of Kylian Mbappe

However, the club’s transfer ban meant the France international ended up staying put for at least another 12 months.

United instead opted to shell out £75m on Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgium international had looked set to join Chelsea, with Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata on Mourinho’s radar.

But Lukaku made the move to Old Trafford instead and has scored four goals from his first four games.
