Manchester United were keen to sign Griezmann in the immediate aftermath of their Europa League win over Ajax back in May.

Midfielder Paul Pogba dropped several hints a deal was in the offing and Jose Mourinho himself refused to rule out the striker moving to Old Trafford.

However, Atletico Madrid's transfer ban ultimately saw the France international stay in Spain.

And the Independent claim the La Liga side were initially preparing for his departure prior to their ban.

It is said they thought the striker would leave for United, who had agreed personal terms with the player.

They were also hellbent on securing the signature of Alexandre Lacazette, who was at Lyon.

But, after Atletico's punishment, the France international ended up joining Arsene Wenger's Arsenal instead.

The Independent also interviewed Griezmann's former agent, Eric Olhats.

And Olhats confirmed his old client was set to move to Old Trafford.

"Griezmann didn't feel able to leave Atletico," he said.

"He's been integral to them and has shown his commitment to the club at a time when they couldn't sign players.

"Without the Fifa sanctions he would have gone."

Manchester United instead opted to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton in a £75million deal.

And the Belgium international has enjoyed a fine start to life at Old Trafford, scoring four goals in his first four games.
