Benitez wants to bring in new players in the final days of the transfer window after a disappointing summer.

But the Spaniard has been told to sell before he can buy.

And Benitez is ready to sell last season’s top scorer Gayle to Championship side Fulham for just under £15m, according to RMCSport in France.

Slavisa Jokanovic is keen on another striker after taking just six points from five games and sitting 14th in the Championship.

Dwight Gayle could be heading to Fulham

Fulham have sold Sone Aluko to Reading in a deal worth £7.5m making a new forward the top priority.

Aluko was left out of the team that beat Ipswich 2-0 at the weekend.

Gayle, meanwhile, was dropped for Newcastle’s win over West Ham after coming off as a substitute in the first two games of the season.

Gayle failed to score against Huddersfield and Tottenham.

Express Sport understands Newcastle are set to make a move for Divock Origi and remain hopeful of signing Kennedy on loan from Chelsea.
