Man Utd transfer news: Jose Mourinho wants four signings this summer

That is the view of journalists Adrian Clarke and David Walker.

Manchester United have spent around £150million this summer on Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof.

But Jose Mourinho has repeatedly discussed his desire to land a fourth player ahead of this season to bolster their Premier League and Champions League hopes.

And while United have been linked with Danny Rose, Gareth Bale and Ivan Perisic, they look unlikely to make another big signing before tomorrow night’s 11pm deadline.

When asked if he could see Mourinho landing a fourth signing, journalist Walker told BT Sport’s Football Writers podcast: “I’m not sure I can this week but I’ve got to say looking at what they’ve got and they way Jose Mourinho has set that team up I don’t think it’s going to matter that he doesn’t get it.

“I believe Matic particularly will prove to be one of the key signings of the season, especially given his arrival as the holding man is about as good as you are going to get in the Premier League.

“And what we are then seeing from people like Paul Pogba, being allowed to bomb on and do more, so I have a feeling Manchester United are going to have a very successful season.

“And if they don’t quite get what Jose wants I don’t think they need to despair.”

Former midfielder Clarke, who now works in the media, added: “The missing link of the jigsaw is a left footer, a left-back or a left winger to add more balance to the side.

“I love what [Antonio] Valencia produces down the right-hand side and I think ideally you’d like a carbon copy of him to fly down the left.

“But look if they are not around in this window it’s not a disaster.”
