Liverpool transfer news: Philippe Coutinho is wanted by Barcelona

Balague says Barca hold hope of doing a late deal today for the Brazilian after watching Liverpool’s transfer activity.

They are said to have taken heart from the fact Liverpool are signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

That, coupled with the fact that talks are underway for Thomas Lemar and Virgil van Dijk, is said to show Barca that Coutinho could go.

The La Liga expert tweeted: “1. FCB think signing of The Ox, and negotiations for Lemar/Van Djik show LFC will accept a new offer 4 Cout. (not arrived yet), but...

“2. LFC insist signings nothing to do with Coutinho, not for sale. (If) new offer, will be rejected. They consistent with message throughout.”

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has called for Liverpool to stay strong if they are to keep the playmaker.

He said: "I think strong management is crucial in this situation.

“Part of your job as a coach also is to educate your players' character so they have a responsibility to what they're doing.

"Obviously, in some cases, that is changing a bit. It's disappointing because I'm sure that, in the case of Liverpool, they did a very good job in making Coutinho the player he is today.

"So, it's a bit disappointing but you have to deal with it and the transfer window doesn't help in that situation.”
