Chelsea transfer news: Blues want to sign Davide Zappacosta

Chelsea are desperate to sign a new defensive wide man and today lost out to Liverpool in the battle to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has already brought in Antonio Rudiger from the Italian top flight this summer.

And the boss wants another Serie A star to come in and bolster his defensive options before today’s 11pm deadline.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claim Chelsea have launched a £23million bid plus add-ons.

That would see the Italian arrive for a lower fee than the £40m Liverpool have stumped up for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Conte has endured a frustrating summer int eh transfer window, with Chelsea buying players as replacements to departures.

He has also been unable to cash in on rebel Diego Costa.

Costa remains hopeful of securing a move to Atletico Madrid before tonight but that seems unlikely.

Zappacosta, 25, made 29 appearances for Torino last season and has continued to play a starting role in their XI this term.

The Italy international joined Torino from Atalanta in 2015 for £8m.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim Torino are worried they would be left with only Lorenzo De Silvestri at full-back if Zappacosta secured his move.
