Man Utd News: Romelu Lukaku joining Chelsea never made any sense - Danny Higginbotham

CHELSEA signing Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku would not have made sense, according to Danny Higginbotham.

Lukaku swapped Everton for Manchester United in July after initially being set for a return to Chelsea.

Antonio Conte had earmarked the Belgium international as his No1 target following his decision to dump Diego Costa.

Costa remains in Chelsea exile after seeing a return to former club Atletico Madrid fall through yesterday, and has consequently been named in their 25-man Premier League squad.

And former United star Higginbotham thinks that, had Chelsea been successful in signing Lukaku, then it would have been a strange move of the transfer window.

Man Utd News: Danny Higginbotham says Romelu Lukaku would not have suited Chelsea

“When Romelu Lukaku was clearly leaving Everton, it was suggested Chelsea were interested," he told The Sun.

“But that move made no sense because they would have had to completely change their style of play.

“Diego Costa occupied the centre-half and dropped deep, creating space in behind for Pedro, Hazard or Willian, or the wing-backs getting round the back.

“Lukaku plays on the shoulder of the last defender and pushes defences back.

Man Utd News: Romelu Lukaku has been a big hit since snubbing Chelsea

“It would have been an utter change of identity for Chelsea. If it ain’t broke and all that . . . and they had won the title after all.”

Lukaku has already made an instant impact at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old got off the mark in Manchester United’s 2-1 European Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid.

And he has also found the net against West Ham and Swansea - though missed a penalty in the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Leicester last weekend.
