Liverpool News: Reds made massive mistake in Mbappe and Van Dijk chase - Castles

LIVERPOOL triggered a public relations nightmare by revealing their transfer targets at the start of the summer… and then not signing them!

Jurgen Klopp on lack of transfers: 'I'm NOT worried'

Liverpool went into the summer in bullish mood as Jurgen Klopp went about preparing his side for Champions League football this season.

They were early contenders to sign Virgil van Dijk but Southampton threatened to report their approach to the Premier League.

Liverpool were also interested in Kylian Mbappe, only for his transfer fee to inflate before he secured a move to PSG.

Thomas Lemar, Emerson Palmieri and Renato Sanches were all linked with the Anfield club.

And journalist Duncan Castles claims the Reds didn’t achieve the wholly successful transfer window they were hoping for.

“When you step back and look at what they've done in this window in light of deadline day, Liverpool are only the fifth highest spenders,” he told The Transfer Window podcast.

“They've only spent around £90m in total in transfer fees.

“This is a window in which they went in saying it would be the biggest spend ever.

“They would try and get players like Mbappe, that's where they started off in the window. The net spend is around £50m.

“They missed out on Van Dijk which a lot of fans expected to come through.

“In terms of PR they're not in a good position.”

However, Castles did concede that Philippe Coutinho remaining at Anfield after Barcelona’s public pursuit was a boost for the club.

He said: “But there's another interpretation. Liverpool have been clear throughout that they wouldn't sell the player.”

Klopp signed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on deadline day, to add to his other acquisitions Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andrew Robertson.
