Everton striker Rooney was arrested after being stopped by police near his home in Prestbury, Cheshire, early on Friday.

He has since been charged and will appear at Stockport magistrates court on September 18, the day after facing his former club Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

The outcome of the case will dictate whether Everton take any disciplinary action, although Koeman wants to speak to the forward to find out more about what happened.

Rooney announced his international retirement just under two weeks ago, having rejected manager Gareth Southgate’s offer of an England recall for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia.

At the time, Koeman welcomed the decision, suggesting that it would allow the 31-year-old more recovery time between matches to keep himself in good condition for Everton’s domestic and European games.

All of the Everton players not on international duty were scheduled to return to training today at the club’s Finch Farm base after a few days’ break.

Rooney is expected to be among them, and is likely to keep his place in the team for Saturday’s match against Tottenham at Goodison Park.
