Man Utd news: Jamie Vardy says Ruud van Nistelrooy chants motivated him to break record

LEICESTER striker Jamie Vardy has revealed chants from Manchester United fans motivated him to break a Premier League record.

The Story of Jamie Vardy

Vardy was influential in Leicester’s memorable title-winning season in the 2015/16 campaign, scoring 19 times.

Thirteen of those goals came in 11 consecutive games, breaking the Premier League record previously held by Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The historical moment coincidently came against United in a 1-1 draw in November 2015.

For the first 23 minutes of the game, the visiting support sung Van Nistelrooy’s infamous Old Trafford chant but Vardy silenced them when he smashed past goalkeeper David de Gea.

The England striker was asked about how that run can help motivate other players to come through non-league football and reach the top like he did.

I think it was a bit of emotions and listening to the Man Utd fans shout Ruud van Nistelrooy all day

“You don’t really think about it like that at the time,” Jamie Vardy said on Sky Sports.

“Obviously after you realise when other people are talking about it that it can help and inspire others.

“No, not at all (I couldn’t believe what happened).

“Especially with that goal, I can’t even remember why my celebration was like that.

“I think it was a bit of emotions and listening to the Manchester United fans shout Ruud van Nistelrooy all day made me overreact slightly.”
