Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp must recall Simon Mignolet against Man City - Dominic Matteo

LIVERPOOL goalkeeper Simon Mignolet should be recalled for this Saturday’s crunch clash against Manchester City (12.30pm), according to former Reds defender Dominic Matteo.

Mingolet says threat of being dropped made him more determined

Mignolet started Liverpool’s first four games of the season in all competitions but was left out of the squad for the 4-0 win over Arsenal.

Manager Jurgen Klopp says the Belgium international needed to be “rested” and instead played Loris Karius between the sticks.

Matteo, who played 155 games for Liverpool after coming through their academy, says Mignolet deserves a run of games and only needs to make a few tweaks to improve his performances.

“I don’t think Mignolet has done too much wrong to be honest,” Matteo told Sky Sports.

I’d like to see Simon Mignolet given a good run of games

Dominic Matteo on Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet

“We know that sometimes he maybe comes for something he shouldn’t come for, but I think he just needs to sort that out.

“A rule of thumb for me is if you’re not going to get it, stay on your line and let the defenders get on with it.

“I think there needs to be a bit more communication between the goalkeeper and the centre-halves, maybe about who’s going to win it, who’s going to head it and who’s going to catch it.

“I think once that’s sorted out, I think Simon Mignolet is a great shot stopper.

Liverpool news: Simon Mignolet was rested for the 4-0 win over Arsenal

“He makes a lot of good saves that never get mentioned. The thing with goalkeepers is you only mention their mistakes.

“He had a good end to last season and for me personally I’d like to see Simon Mignolet given a good run of games.

"I think confidence-wise he’s in a good position.”

Liverpool travel to the Etihad to face Pep Guardiola's City who are also unbeaten after their opening three league games.
