Newcastle take on the Welsh outfit at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday (4pm) but there are concerns the Spaniard may miss the trip.

Rafa Benitez has missed training with Newcastle this week after recovering from an operation to remove an infection.

The 57-year-old went under the knife for a hernia operation two yeas ago but the discomfort has since seen him had to undergo surgery once more.

Benitez opted to have the operation during the international break and had hoped to lessen the impact on Newcastle’s season, but his recovery is taking longer than expected.

The Independent claim he had planned to return for sessions yesterday and today with a view to finalising his team’s preparations for Sunday’s match.

But he has been unable to resume his position at St James’ Park and there are now worries he will not be able to return to the club’s Benton training ground this week.

Benitez is doing all he can to ensure he is fit for the visit to Swansea and is eager to link up with his players once again.

The former Liverpool boss is looking to build on Newcastle’s first win of the season prior to the international break when they defeated West Ham.

Benitez is adamant he will be in charge on Sunday but may have to listen to medical advice.

Newcastle sit 14th in the Premier League table, one point behind 13th-placed Swansea.
