Tottenham News: Harry Kane aims to prove to Europe's elite he’s a world-class star

HARRY KANE will carry the flag for club and country when he makes his Champions League bow at Wembley for Spurs as the only Englishman considered good enough to compete for FIFA's Best Men's Player Of 2017 award.

He won't know until next Friday if he has done enough to make the final three from an elite list of 24 that includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar. And next month to find out who gets the top gong.

But last year's Premier League Golden Boot winner is well aware that he has to win a battle of the big hitters next Wednesday if he wants to come anywhere near being ranked as the best in the world.

That will be against Borussia Dortmund's prolific striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is also on that roll call of world greats, and who has fared quite well against Spurs in the past.

If that isn't tough enough north London's golden boy also needs to deliver on a Wembley stage that has been a far from happy hunting ground for Spurs who have won only once in four European matches there since moving temporarily while White Hart Lane is being redeveloped.

It's a tall order, even for someone as good as Kane.

When these two last came face to face two years ago in the Europa League Aubameyang scored three times in both legs in a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Sometimes my mates say 'wonder what you'd be worth'

And so far the Germans' Gabon-born striker has scored in eight successive matches for Dortmund in all competitions dating back to mid-April and in 11 of his last 13 - 14 goals in total.

Kane, fresh from two successful World Cup outings with England, is relishing the challenge. He simply loves playing for Tottenham.

He says: "Sometimes my mates say 'wonder what you'd be worth.' But that's not something that's on my mind.

"If I was thinking of moving maybe I would think of that, but I'm totally committed to Spurs."

He will need to be on Wednesday against a Dortmund side that has hit the ground running in the Bundesliga and we're lording it over Bayern Munich up to this weekend.

But whoever wins that battle between Kane and Aubameyang faces stiff competition to win FIFA's top accolade from the likes of Eden Hazard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andres Iniesta, and N’Golo Kante.

Voting has now closed for a panel of FIFA Legends to whittle down next Friday before the eventual winner is unveiled in London on October 23.

* Kane's Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is one of 12 candidates for the 2017 The Best FIFA Men’s Coach of the Year, alongside Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.
