JOSE MOURINHO has insisted he is “more than confident” with new signing Victor Lindelof, despite hardly using the defender this term.

Victor Lindelof is yet to make a Premier League appearance for Manchester United

Victor Lindelof was Manchester United’s first summer signing, joining from Benfica for £30million.

Many expected the Sweden international to become a first-team regular alongside Eric Bailly at the back, but Jose Mourinho has used him sparingly.

The 23-year-old’s only appearance this term came in the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

However, Mourinho has insisted he has full confidence in Lindelof and will hand him a start in tomorrow night’s Champions League clash with Basel (7.45pm).

"There is no need for him to adapt to the Champions league but he needs a bit of time to adapt to the Premier league,” Mourinho said.

“Especially the new Premier League.

"He is very bright and very clam and step by step he will be there.

“I am more than confident for tomorrow [Tuesday], he is a very good player with a very good potential.

"Even if Bailly and [Phil] Jones were not suspended, probably I would still play Lindelof and Smalling.

“They are at the same level, they are just different players."

Lindelof has only been included in one match-day squad this season and failed to make it off the bench in the 4-0 win over Swansea.

For the West Ham, Leicester and Stoke games he was left out of the team altogether by Mourinho.
