West Ham were said to be keen on signing a new winger in the summer, having failed in a late bid for Everton wide man Kevin Mirallas.

And now The Sun claim Borussia Dortmund’s Schurrle was offered to West Ham 24 hours before deadline day.

The Hammers had the option to take the Germany international on loan for the season with a £26million obligation to buy next summer.

However, West Ham were apparently more concerned with getting a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho over the line - leaving Schurrle in limbo.

The east London club were heavily linked with Carvalho towards the end of the summer window but failed to reach an agreement with Sporting.

West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan said: “It’s no secret that we made a club record bid for William Carvalho, but unfortunately that offer was rejected.”

The Sun add that Schurrle was keen on a return to England, having spent two seasons at Chelsea where he won the Premier League and League Cup.

Chelsea sold Schurrle to Wolfsburg in January 2015 before he joined Dortmund the following year.

But the 26-year-old, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, has so far failed to break into the first team at Westfalenstadion.

He played just 15 Bundesliga games last season under Thomas Tuchel and has featured just once under Peter Bosz this term due to injury.
