Celtic News: Brendan Rodgers failed in deadline day swoop for Man City ace Phil Foden

CELTIC failed with a deadline day bid for Manchester City youngster Phil Foden, reports say.

Phil Foden's amazing skills for Man City

Celtic soared to the Scottish Premiership title last season, winning 34 out of 38 games and staying unbeaten in the process.

Brendan Rodgers, however, did not want Celtic to rest on their laurels and signed both Jonny Hayes and Kundai Benyu.

The Northern Irishman also raided Manchester City for Olivier Ntcham, who signed for an undisclosed fee, and secured a loan deal for Patrick Roberts.

Yet Team Talk say the Hoops also wanted City youngster Foden, who is regarded as one of the best players their academy has to offer.

The 17-year-old’s stock rose after impressing on the Citizens’ pre-season tour of the US.

One particularly memorable performance against Manchester United saw pundit Gary Neville express his wish for the player to be at Old Trafford instead.

“He's at the wrong Manchester club for getting a sustained opportunity,” Neville said.

“City have a lot of great kids. They should be playing.”

Team Talk say Celtic were willing to pay a fee of £1.5million to take him on loan for the season.

But City boss Pep Guardiola blocked a move.

Foden has supposedly been assured game time for when City’s season gets congested with Champions League and League Cup games.

Yet with so many players in their ranks, whether Guardiola keeps to his word remains to be seen.
