Liverpool Sevilla: Eduardo Berizzo gives bizarre reason for red card

EDUARDO BERIZZO thought he was harshly sent off after throwing the ball away during the 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Sevilla this evening.

The Sevilla boss was sent to the stands by the referee after clearly throwing the ball away as Joe Gomez went to retrieve it for a throw-in.

It wasn't the first time Berizzo had done that during the match though.

He received a warning from the referee in the first half when Sevilla were leading 1-0, having thrown the ball away as Liverpool looked to hit the La Liga club on the counter.

But Berizzo hadn't learned his lesson and repeated his actions in the second period with the Reds 2-1 up.

However, in his post-match interview, the 47-year-old attempted to explain he was trying to HELP Liverpool by throwing the ball away a second time.

“It was two different actions and situations,” Berizzo said.

“When we were winning and Liverpool were on the counter I did something that wasn't right, I threw the ball to stop the advantage of a counter attack. I realised that was a mistake.

“However in the second half, when we were losing and chasing the game, I still decided to throw the ball away to make up for (my actions in) the first half, so I tried to do the same.

“Klopp understood but the referee didn't understand, he was the only one.

“I had a chat with Klopp and wanted to put right the initial mistake.

"He (the referee) did act to the letter of the law, but I wanted to try to explain, what I did explain to the Liverpool staff is that it wasn't a bad intention, I was just trying to make up for what happened before.”
