Liverpool v Sevilla: Reds don’t have intensity or concentration to defend - Rio Ferdinand

RIO FERDINAND has criticised Liverpool for struggling to maintain their intensity and concentration when playing their ‘high-press’ style of football.

Jurgen Klopp clashes with Sevilla bench after draw

Liverpool were left frustrated and had to settle for a point in their 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League last night.

The Reds went behind early on when Wissam Ben Yedder gave them the lead following a mistake from Dejan Lovren.

Jurgen Klopp’s side did turn the game around with goals from Robert Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

But Firmino’s penalty miss proved to be costly as they surrendered their lead on 72 minutes with Joaquin Correa cutting through the defence to fire past Loris Karius.

Jordan Henderson admitted after the game that need to be more ‘ruthless’.

And Rio Ferdinand has agreed, with the former Manchester United defender also picking apart the Merseyside club’s defensive frailties.

“Jordan Henderson hit the nail on the head - they have to be more ruthless,” Ferdinand told BT Sport

“They had Sevilla on the ropes but they didn’t put the nail in the coffin to finish the game off and they got caught with a sucker punch.

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Liverpool for their defensive frailties against Sevilla

But if a team get out beyond that first press the intensity drops and the concentration levels drop and they don’t look the same team at all

Rio Ferdinand

“There are two elements to the way they defend. They are great when they defend high and press the ball to win it back - that early press from the midfield to the in behind their strikers.

“But if a team get out beyond that first press the intensity drops and the concentration levels drop and they don’t look the same team at all.”

He added: “We could see in the second goal that’s when they got past that press when there is a throw on and they don’t have the concentration or the intensity to defend it.”
