Liverpool News: Sadio Mane says Man City red card shocked him despite Ederson injury

LIVERPOOL star Sadio Mane has admitted he was taken aback by his red card against Manchester City on Saturday.

Sadio Mane's PRICELESS reaction to 'red card' question

Liverpool endured a humiliating afternoon at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City put Jurgen Klopp's side to the sword with a five-goal showing.

The Reds trailed by just one before Mane was dismissed for a high foot that saw goalkeeper Ederson require eight stitches on his face.

The sending-off prompted much debate on social media yet Mane's failure to get to the ball meant referee Jon Moss was given no choice but to give him his marching orders.

But the Senegal international has revealed he only thought he would receive a caution, despite the fact the challenge left Ederson on the floor for quite some time.

"Honestly, I was focusing more on the goalkeeper than the card and when I saw the red card I was surprised because I was expecting a yellow card," the Liverpool star said.

"But I'll accept it and try to forget it.

"I was going for the ball and I didn't have the intention to hurt him because I'm not that kind of player. I wish him a quick recovery.

"It's not easy for me because I love to play football and I enjoy helping my team to win games."

Liverpool tried to appeal Mane's red but to no avail.

Afterwards, manager Klopp admitted he thought it was a waste of time.

Liverpool News: Sadio Mane was stunned by his Man City red card

"I am not sure if I am disappointed, I didn't expect anything different," said Klopp.

"I thought our appeal was absolutely right because it was never we said we would appeal the red card, it was the length of the suspension.

"He has already half-a-game suspension at City so I think it would have been the right decision for them to say 'one game less' so it would be two and a half rather than three and a half games.

"I actually never thought it would happen but only because I am used to things like this - it is not an English thing.

"It was our duty to appeal. We did it and, as I said after the game, it was a waste of time obviously. We only want to bring it in relation to the other issues."
