Arsenal have had a poor start to the season, losing both their away games to Stoke and Liverpool respectively, the latter being a demoralising 4-0 defeat.

The Gunners kicked off their Europa League campaign last night with a 3-1 win over Cologne.

But their attentions will swiftly turn to Sunday’s crunch clash away to Chelsea this weekend who look back to their best following a shock defeat to Burnley on the opening day of the season.

And former Arsenal star Merson believes Arsene Wenger’s side need to make a fast start at Stamford Bridge or risk being on the wrong end of a big result.

“It's all about the first goal. If Arsenal score first you will watch and think 'wow, they look decent’,” Merson told Sky Sports.

They will be confident and they have good players who look decent when they are winning.

“But when they are losing too many of them just go completely and utterly missing.

“People are saying to me 'what a good result against Bournemouth' but if you could have handpicked any team to play last week it was Bournemouth.

“If Arsenal score first it will be a very interesting match but I don't think they will.”
