Chelsea news: Centre-forward is biggest worry, Antonio Conte has gambled - Paul Merson

CHELSEA boss Antonio Conte has taken a huge gamble by not buying another striker in the summer transfer window, according to pundit Paul Merson.

Conte brought Alvaro Morata to Chelsea from Real Madrid in a deal which could rise to £70million.

The Spaniard has hit the ground running, scoring three in his first four Premier League games.

With Diego Costa out of the picture, Michy Batshuayi is the only first-team back-up to Morata.

Merson says that is not a problem at the moment but if Morata picks up a serious injury, Conte’s gamble would not have paid off.

The biggest worry is the centre-forward. If Morata gets injured, God-forbid he doesn’t, then I see a problem

“You look at it and it looks quite strong at the moment,” Merson said on Sky Sports of Antonio Conte’s squad.

“But you’re talking 38 league games, you’re talking Champions League games, cup games.

“So over probably, if they have good cup runs, 60 games, will that be strong enough?

“The biggest worry is the centre-forward. If Morata gets injured, God-forbid he doesn’t, and the other lad’s got to play 12 games on the trot, then I see a problem.

Chelsea news: If Alvaro Morata got injured, Antonio Conte's side will be in trouble, says Merson

“To come in for a couple of games here and there, he won’t let Chelsea down and he hasn’t.

“But if you give him a long distance of games, a longevity of games, I don’t think he will be enough.

“I think come January they will have to get another centre-forward, they’ve taken a big chance here.

“It’s alright playing Hazard up-front on his own or not playing a centre-forward and at the moment it’s a good enough squad, at the moment and they’re back to best.”

Chelsea are back in Premier League action tomorrow when they host Arsenal at Stamford Bridge (1.30pm).
