Liverpool have been linked with a move for Stefan de Vrij following the club’s poor defensive performances in recent weeks.

The Reds have been shipping goals and find themselves in eighth place after a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City and a shock 1-1 draw with Burnley.

Many have called for Jurgen Klopp to strengthen at the back with Holland international De Vrij emerging as a target at the weekend.

However, Lazio have shut down talk of a move to Anfield for the centre-half by claiming he will soon agree a new contract with the Italian club.

When asked about De Vrij’s situation before the 3-2 win over Genoa at the weekend, Lazio sporting director Igli Tare said: “We are optimistic on De Vrij's contract renewal.

“We have a great understanding with his entourage.”

And when asked if the club were missing Lucas Biglia and Keita Balde who departed in the summer, Tare shrugged off their moves.

“Biglia and Keita? They both gave a lot to Lazio but we have a good team. The season will be long as we have to fight hard," he added.

De Vrij’s current contract expires next summer, meaning Lazio must act fast if they are to keep hold of the Dutchman.

The 25-year-old will be eligible to discuss terms with new clubs in January with just six months remaining on his deal.

He joined Lazio in 2014 from Eredivisie side Feyenoord and has since made 77 appearances for the Italian club in all competitions.

He has 31 caps for Holland and was part of Danny Blind’s squad at Euro 2016.
