Wayne Rooney as been fined £320,000 after pleading guilty to drink driving

Rooney appeared in court this morning and was handed a two-year driving ban and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.

Rooney, who played against former club Manchester United yesterday, was stopped by police while over the drinking limit on September 1 during the international break.

The 31-year-old was driving Laura Simpson’s car after a night out in Cheshire.

He was given a dressing down by Everton manager Ronald Koeman and after pleading guilty today handed a fine worth £320,000.

Rooney has apologised in a statement saying: "Following today's court hearing I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.

"I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

"Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service."

Wayne Rooney returned to Old Trafford with Everton on Sunday

Rooney had started the season well after returning to Everton from Manchester this summer with goals in his first two games, including the opener against Manchester City.

But he has now gone five games without a goal and Everton six without a win.

The Toffees have now conceded 10 goals in their last three games and dropped into the bottom three on Sunday after the 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
