Chelsea are facing their third FIFA investigation in eight years over their policy over signing young players.

It was confirmed yesterday the governing body had launched an inquiry into the club’s conduct involving transfers of foreign players under the age of 18.

Atletico Madrid are currently under a transfer embargo for breaching similar rules about the signing of minors and their appeal was upheld by the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS).

Chelsea are no strangers to investigations from FIFA over a break in transfer rules though, having been banned for two windows in September 2009 due to Gael Kakuta’s move from Lens in 2007.

However, the club successfully appealed the ruling but were under the watchful eye from FIFA once again last year regarding Bertrand Traore’s transfer when pictures emerged of the midfielder playing for the Blues before he had international clearance at the age of 16.

A spokesman told the Daily Mail: “As the investigation is on-going no further comment is possible for the time being.”

Liverpool and Manchester City have also been given a slap on the wrist by the Premier League for their conduct regarding the signing of academy players.

Both clubs are now unable to sign any academy players for the next two years due to tapping up.

A club spokesman said: “Chelsea FC complies with all Fifa statutes and regulations when recruiting players.”
