Man Utd news: Romelu Lukaku chant wasn’t that bad... there has been worse - Ian Wright

IAN WRIGHT reckons he’s heard much worse chants than the one which was directed at Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku.

Fans chant explicit song about Romelu Lukaku

During United’s 3-0 win over Basel at Old Trafford in the Champions League last week, fans were heard singing a song about Lukaku.

Reports emerged that Kick It Out were aware of such footage and that they would speak to United about the matter.

But while Wright accepts the chants weren’t pleasant, it’s not the worst one he’s ever heard.

“I’ve heard worst,” Wright told Sky Sports’ The Debate show.

"This one has racial undertones about it but I think there’s a lot worse going on right now that I think is more important than this one.

"I think they’re all important but I just feel this is something that’s not going to cause too much problems right now.

"There’s another one going on right now that they should be paying more attention to.”

Anti-racism organisation Kick It Out released a statement condemning the actions of the fans.

It read: “Kick It Out is aware of footage of alleged racist chanting by supporters of Manchester United that emerged on Wednesday evening [September 13].

“The lyrics used in the chant are offensive and discriminatory.

Ian Wright thinks there have been worse chants than the one about Romelu Lukaku

“Racist stereotypes are never acceptable in football or wider society, irrespective of any intention to show support for a player.

“We have contacted Manchester United regarding the issue and will be working closely with them and the FA to ensure that it is addressed swiftly.

“If we receive any reports relating to the discriminatory chant, those will be passed on to the governing body and the perpetrators can expect to face punishment.”
